Pledge your support to The Pankhurst Centre
The Pankhurst Centre is in dire need of funding, and this year, during the centenary of Votes for Women, we are determined to change its fortunes. The demand for the museum this year has been overwhelming, yet with lack of funding or sufficient staffing, we are still only able to open to the public once a week, with the addition of two Sunday afternoons a month. We have an exceptional volunteer team and awareness of our need for funding is building, but it will take more than £4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the building and transform it into an enhanced museum attraction, making it sustainable for the future, and ensuring a permanent home for the suffragette legacy.
We need your help in lobbying your local MP…
In any other country, this important heritage site would be a treasured asset with proper funding and we are asking for your support to send this message to the government to help us progress our application for investment. Lucy Powell MP is advocating for the Centre by writing to the Prime Minister and asking MPs across the country to support the campaign.
In the spirit of the Suffragettes, whose tactics were designed to attract press attention, we are inviting you to help us gain the attention of the government by contacting your local MP by email or post to encourage them to support the campaign, and/or tweeting them directly with the image below.
We have provided a template letter below or you may prefer to write something in your own words. Please do let us know what your MP says.

I am writing on behalf of Lucy Powell MP and The Pankhurst Trust to request your help in securing government investment for The Pankhurst Centre in Manchester – one of the most iconic sites of suffrage heritage in the UK.
The Pankhurst Centre, based at the former home of Emmeline Pankhurst, is the building in which the Women’s Social and Political Union was founded in 1903 and the birthplace of the Suffragette movement. Today it houses the UK’s only museum dedicated to the women’s suffrage movement. It is a building of immense historical significance and national importance, providing remembrance of one of the most pivotal progressions in our country’s political history, and yet it receives no public funding, instead relying on volunteers and donations.
The Centre does more than preserve and uphold the legacy of the Suffragette movement. As well as being a museum, it supports Manchester women going through the hardest time of their lives by offering a range of specialist services for women experiencing domestic violence and abuse.
The building is in dire need of investment and it is my view this important heritage should be preserved. Lucy Powell MP has coordinated a cross-Party letter from over 50 MPs to the Prime Minister Theresa May to request funding and I am asking that you please back the campaign and write to the Prime Minister too.
You will be aware that 2018 is the centenary of the first women gaining the right to vote in the UK. What a fitting tribute it would be to secure funding this year, to ensure a permanent home for the Suffragette legacy so that we can continue to inspire and empower future generations with the powerful story of the women who won the vote!
Thank you for your support and I hope that you will back this important campaign.
